The Art of Candle Making: A Step-by-Step Guide

Ever wondered how those beautiful soy candles you see on Instagram or in boutique stores are made? Candle making is more than just a craft—it's a sensory, soulful experience. Whether you're a curious beginner or just someone who loves candles, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know about making candles at home.

Can You Make Candles at Home or Should You Buy Them?

Absolutely, you can do both! If you're dreaming of elaborate designs, exotic textures, or ultra-professional finishes, store-bought candles (like the ones we handcraft at Mandy & Co) are your best bet. But if you’re feeling crafty and want to try your hand at something simple and soulful, candle making at home is a beautiful experience.

All you need is some soy wax, a wick, a double boiler, and a few drops of your favorite essential oil. That’s it. Just enough to light your space—and your spirit. Candle making isn’t just a task; it’s a calming ritual. And once you start, you might just fall in love with the process.

Step-by-Step Guide to Candle Making

Step 1: Gather Your MaterialsYou’ll need:

  • Natural soy wax

  • Candle wicks

  • Double boiler or a makeshift one (a bowl over boiling water)

  • Candle jars or moulds

  • Essential oils (like lavender, rose, or sandalwood)

  • A thermometer

  • Optional: dried flowers, mica powders, or herbs for decoration

Step 2: Melt the Soy Wax

Use a double boiler to gently melt the soy wax. Stir occasionally and keep the temperature between 170–180°F (76–82°C). Don’t let it overheat.

Note: ALWAYS use a double boiler. Never put the wax container over direct heat as it has extremely high chances of catching fire!

Step 3: Add Fragrance

Once the wax melts, let it cool slightly (to around 140–160°F) (Ideally use the thermometer to check the temperature- digital thermometer works well). Add 6–10% of your chosen essential oil to the wax. Stir gently to ensure the fragrance blends evenly. This is what gives your candle that luxurious aroma.

You should ideally stir for 2 mins or a minimum count of 80-100.

Step 4: Prepare the Jar and Wick

Place your wick in the center of the jar and secure it with a wick holder or by wrapping the top around a pencil laid across the jar. Make sure it stays upright.

Step 5: Pour the Wax

Slowly pour the scented wax into the container. Leave a little space at the top. Let it sit undisturbed in a cool, dry place.

Step 6: Trim the Wick

After 24–48 hours of setting time, trim the wick to about 1/4 inch. Your handmade soy candle is now ready to use or gift!

Why Choose Soy Wax for Candle Making?

Soy wax is plant-based, biodegradable, and burns cleaner than paraffin wax. It’s perfect for creating non-toxic, eco-friendly candles that don’t emit harmful fumes—making it ideal for home use, gifts, or meditation.
